Skrillex’s dubstep megahit gets a big room house makeover courtesy of one of my personal favorite remixers, Panic City. He teams up with Mistermike, a Cali-based producer with some high-quality, dub-heavy remixes of his own. Their new take on “Summit” makes the song almost unrecognizable tat times. But the familiar glitches and growls are just enough to bring the listener back to the original before being taken once again in a brand new direction. Good stuff, boys.

As many of you already know, the popular festival, known as EDC, will be taking place Memorial Day Weekend, May 24th-May 26th, at the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, and by looking at this lineup it looks pretty promising. Not only is this Chicago’s first ever Electric Daisy Carnival, but it also is the first EDC to ever have a full camping experience. If you’re going, get ready for an unforgettable weekend!

This is prime.  A great release for so many reasons.  A great rebound following the unexpected and unintentional success of Baauer’s infamous “Harlem Shake.”  And amidst the legal issues surrounding the YouTube propelled Harlem Shake frenzy, you’d think Baauer was somewhat preoccupied…  apparently not.  This latest release completely derails the situation and provides that critical curveball to remind everyone what great music is all about.  The combination of Baauer’s gritty style together with Disclosure’s soulful sound and unprecedented recent rise to fame is the perfect storm.  It honestly excites me to know we’ll be hearing this kind of stuff in the clubs and hopefully the radio as well.

This may prove to be unpopular, but as much as I think “Thunder” will dominate the summer festival scene, it’s not one of my absolute favorite tracks of the moment. Perhaps it’s because I keep hearing little pieces of other songs in it. Sure, the arrangement is great (especially the filtered synths at the beginning), and the energy the track summons is off the charts. But there’s something just a shade too familiar about the sounds I’m hearing. That being said, I’ve already downloaded it for all of my sets, and will mostly likely try to work out some sort of bootleg or edit using it. So where does that leave this review? Well, I’m not quite sure. But who are we kidding? We know this track is already huge. So maybe I should stop thinking so hard and just give in to the urge to rage.

As a hip hop-loving white boy from Queens, I may not be the most objective person to review Action Bronson’s New York-centric single. My DNA commands me to love this track regardless of what it might sound like. But what is does sound like is even better than I could have hoped. Bronson (AKA Bam Bam Baklava, AKA Bronsini, AKA Yung Rick Pitino, as his Twitter handle now declares) is a throwback lyricist who’s at the forefront of the much talked about New York Rap Renaissance. His recent rise to rap stardom has coincided with other East Coast champs like A$AP Rocky, Joey BadA$$, and Flatbush Zombies. Each brings their own unique elements to the game. But Bronson, in my opinion, is the true standout. Besides the obvious attention-getting appearance he sports, Action also works in more vivid images, local geography, food allusions, and genuine hilarity into one verse than most rappers can fit into a career.

This track is currently featured on NYC kingpin DJ Funkmaster Flex’s new mixtape, Who You Mad At: Me or Yourself? And its bravado and boom-bap audacity is the perfect fit. Grab this version here, and be sure to check out the entire mix, available for free download via Flex’s new mobile app.

Markus Schulz Answers the Call, Extends Scream Tour in the Fall

Few names resonate in trance music like the name Markus Schulz, so when he speaks, the people listen. Last weekend he put an exclamation point on his sold out Scream Tour, providing an eight-hour journey for a packed house at club Avalon in Tinsel Town. Prior to the show he took some time out to allude to what fans can look forward to in the coming months and apparently there’s much to be excited about.

The initial concept of the Scream Tour was to bring a “big city production to some of the smaller markets in the US.” Seeing cities like Albuquerque and Tulsa without the means to put on a big production like you might find in NY or LA inspired Schulz to provide fans in those types of areas with big booming shows that normally aren’t possible. The result was overwhelmingly successful. Cities like Washington DC and Philadelphia provided such memorable shows that the logical thing to do was to keep the Scream team rolling along with more dates in the fall.

“The club in Philadelphia had such low ceilings that it reminded me of the old Space in Miami. We managed to get our production set up and it looked outrageous. Aesthetically that room was one of the cooler one’s because it didn’t look like the others. “

The Scream Tour not only left those who attended with some epic memories, but they also inspired a slew of new tracks that will be featured on the Scream II album and tour. All the writing that took place on the road will add some big sounds to a set list that already includes favorites like ID, Love Rain Down on Me and a Markus Schulz remix of the classic track Solarcoaster, which he describes as “a classic and timeless melody” that always blows the fans away.

“(The new music is definitely) big room type stuff but there are also some moments that I’ve written more moody type stuff. It gets a little lonely on the road sometimes so there are some haunting melodies in there. It’s a good balance.’

With classic rock a staple in his own personal listening rotation, Schulz cited Pink Floyd’s music and concerts as a predominant inspiration throughout his career, referencing the classic album “Dark Side of the Moon” as a reoccurring influence.

Besides having the road and classic rock as influences, Shulz’s collaboration with Ferry Corsten as New World Punx has provided ample creative fuel recently. “After spending time with Ferry Corsten we realized how similar we are. We have so much fun in the studio, high fiving each other like ‘Listen to this!’” Feeling that trance has a tendency to get too serious sometimes, Schulz’s goal is to keep it fun on tour and in the studio, resulting in the kind of music that will lift you up and inspire.

After being voted America’s #1 DJ by DJ Times magazine and Pioneer DJ, the Scream Tour was initially billed as a sort of victory tour. But Schulz views Scream as more of a thank you tour, giving back to the fans who have inspired so much.

“It doesn’t matter if I’m playing for 5 people in my living room or 4,000 people at Avalon, I love this music and there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing. It’s amazing what this music has done. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Kids in Tulsa coming up after shows and thanking me for coming to their town. I feel so lucky to be a part of the US scene.”

Prepare for the least surprising sentence of 2013 – This remix is pretty huge.

Hardwell, who’s been playing this beast all over the festival circuit, kicks Krewella’s anthem up a couple of notches. The result is a great track that will work just as well at last call as it will on the main stage. I still think the Hyperbits remix is the best re-imagning of this track, but it’s hard to find a flaw in Hardwell’s game these days. Available on Revealed Records, via Beatport.

After Hardwell recently locked up the last and final remix on “Alive”,  the focus has shifted to some of the other tracks off Krewella’s incredibly successful debut EP. NY progressive house duo Filtercrush gets contracted for remix duties on “Play Hard” . Once again, Filtercrush knocks it out of the park with a silky smooth synth laden progressive take on the track. The tasteful pitch bending and arpeggiated bassline make a perfect contrast against the higher synths. Make sure you guys support this on soundcloud and grab a free download!

Daft Punk’s new album, Random Access Memories, can now be heard in full. Ahead of its May 21st release on Columbia records, the 13-track effort is currently streaming on iTunes. Take a listen here.  And to be clear, it’s only streaming.  No 320 leaks, despite what you may have heard.

In the works since 2008, Daft Punk recorded the album in Paris, Los Angeles, and New York alongside a cavalcade of guest contributors, including Pharrell Williams, The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas, Giorgio Moroder, and Animal Collective’s Panda Bear as guest vocalists, Chic frontman Nile Rodgers on rhythm guitar, and “top-notch session players,” who previously recorded with Michael Jackson, Herbie Hancock, and Eric Clapton.  And as you’d expect, this set off one of the most-hyped album launches in recent memory.

The pair was dissatisfied with early demos, which leaned heavily on electronic equipment, and ultimately adopted a more organic approach. “We wanted to do what we used to do with machines and samplers but with people,” Thomas Bangalter explained to Rolling Stone. Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo added, “The Seventies and the Eighties are the tastiest era for us… It’s not that we can’t make crazy futuristic sounding stuff, but we wanted to play with the past.”

What do we think?  Well… it’s certainly different.  Maybe it’s just me, but it’s not really the kind of ‘different’ I was hoping for−or what the early album previews led me to expect.  The quality is clearly there, but it just doesn’t really do it for me.  I wasn’t expecting any anthems or anything crazy like that, but the majority of tracks are just pretty slow, sad and emotional. I think it’s cool they’re going completely off the grid and reintroducing quality at a much needed time, but the album is pretty far out there in my opinion. Outside of the Pharrell features and a few others, it’s just not that cool, catchy feel I was hoping for.  I’d like to hear your thoughts though, so please comment below.

After weeks of teasing, endless itty-bitty leaks, and about a zillion radio plays of the one track they’d released so far, the entirety of Daft Punk’s new Random Access Memories has just hit iTunes, days before the official release.

The catch: it’s streaming only right now. You can find the link right here. Hit the “View in iTunes” button, then just tap the “Listen Now” button. Enjoy your early taste of the album you’ll be hearing all summer.

While a few sites are declaring this a “leak”, that’s almost certainly not the case. Apple did something similar to this leading up to the recent release of Justin Timberlake’s 20/20 album, and the promotional text of the stream specifically suggests that you “pre-order the album” — which isn’t something they’d say if it wasn’t intended to go up a bit early.

“Why would they do this?” you might ask. “Isn’t this just giving pirates a hi-fi copy to spread around?”

Yes — but that’s very much not a worry at this point. We’ve got just four days before the album’s official street date. The album is almost certainly on trucks around the country. Once it’s on the trucks, it’s being ripped and uploaded to the Internet, almost without fail.

Streaming your album early, on your terms, is the new “accidental” leak. It’s fighting piracy with the only tool that can really fight it: convenience. A massive chunk of people who download leaks do it just to get a taste; to say they heard it early. By giving those people the taste they want through a sanctioned, official, high quality means, you’re nixing the need for them to download a bootleg copy.

Will it eliminate piracy of the album? Of course not — but it’s one small nudge upwards in a hugely uphill battle.

(Plus, artists make most of their money by way of touring these days anyway — and if there’s any show worth seeing live, it’s Daft Punk)

I’m not a huge fan of the voiceover intro, but once the drop hit, I’d promptly forgotten about any hangups I may have had. That’s probably because my senses were being bludgeoned to a fine paste. Been meaning to post this as it’s seriously one of the illest remixes i’ve heard of the slew of Miguel remixes that inevitably followed since the drop of Miguel’s debut album: Kaleidoscope Dream back in Fall 2012. I stumbled across this little gem just now and felt compelled to share. First off, I love the original version of this track. It’s one of the smoothest and genuinely interesting R&B tracks I’ve heard in ages, which is why I’ve avoided grabbing any bootlegs or remixes of it. They just never seemed right. Well, this one does feel right. I think it has to do with just how different the song becomes thanks to Hi-Deaf and Teenage Jesus, two talented producers who I will now be following closely. You should too.

The seasoned Dutch percussion masters, Chocolate Puma, release their latest single “2000 people” via Laidback Luke’s Mix Mash records. The groovy, tech influenced club track is sure to get the dancefloor moving in ways the big room stuff can’t. The track is truly a great showcase of fresh original music.

After receiving its world debut in Hardwell’s Ultra set, “Clap” was released today on Revealed Recordings. The eclectic, genre-defying Dutch producer known as Sktizofrenix, really gives a unique take on currently popular big room peak time festival music. This is definitely a huge track, so make sure you guys grab it on beatport!

I’m on a refueled Dim Mak love train these days. They’ve got another beauty on their hands with this VCO remix of Tommy Trash’s “Blair Witch Project.” It would seem difficult to make a Tommy Trash song sound darker and dirtier than it already was, but VCO seems to be channeling their inner Prodigy on this one, giving the track an even more imposing cadence, and a haunting melody that snakes its way through the entire track. If the real Blair Witch heard this, my feeling is that she would be scared. Either that, or she’d rock out in a major way.

Damn, has this guy been on a roll. Not too long ago, MAKJ’s killer bootlegs and edits seemed to be a little bit of a DJ secret. Not anymore. Nowadays, this guy gets 500 likes if he sneezes near a keyboard. He’s been hitting the fest circuit like a champ and never seems to stop churning out music. He’s got the kind of talent, momentum, and success that just makes me want to hate him a little. But guess what – it’s impossible to hate this guy! He’s humble, enthusiastic, and so musically informed, the only thing to do is to admire his game. Oh, and by the way, this particular track is friggin’ nuts. I dare you not to throw something once the drop hits.

What an intriguing pairing. 80s music legend Andy Taylor of Duran Duran gets the remix treatment from our favorite apocalypse-worshipping Los Angelinos, Cold Blank. Taylor’s new wave roots have an obvious influence on the sound, especially during the opening bars, but there is an undeniable growl lurking underneath that fits right in with Cold Blank’s signature sound.
